Starting out, buying a research lab.

Each of us gets 4 planets. We start with 1 though.

The AI's economy is bigger than mine? Why is that?

AI has a higher morale ability. I didn't put any points there. Hmm. Let's see what it's tax rate is:

My answer: The AI has its taxes at 60%, mine is at 40%.  So if I increase my taxes to 60% what happens?

I catch-up and surpass. Briefly.  I surpass because my economy ability is higher than his.  But my population drops like a stone because of the taxes (people go off the tax rolls).

Okay oops.  My empire also split into the Terran Confederacy (quick reload).

Lost a planet.  The AI is out producing me.

Need enhanced logistics!!!

Need to counter their mass drivers. Gotta get armor!

They out number me but my ships are better.

I win one such battle easily.

But the second fleet wins

I've lost Thindor!

My ships are better. But he has more. Cheap vs. quality. My quality just isn't better enough than his cheapness.

I get medium scale building..Will it be enough in time? I need a killer ship to take on their hordes.

The Omega class destroyer. 4 attack vs 3 defense with it against his type of weapons.

At this point, he's got 6 planets to my 2.
